Thantawan Thai Edinburgh
About This Spot
Stepping into Thantawan Thai Edinburgh feels like discovering a tucked-away corner of Southeast Asia right in the heart of the city. It’s a cozy, unpretentious spot where the air carries a whisper of fragrant spices and the gentle hum of a kitchen bustling with familiar, comforting energy. The pace here is relaxed yet steady, inviting you to pause and savor the moment—even if you’re just popping in for a quick takeaway.
The atmosphere is warm and intimate, with a small dining area that brings together locals and visitors alike, often sharing tables and stories over plates vibrant with flavor. The humble surroundings don’t distract from what truly matters: the food. Each dish carries layers of tradition and care, from curries rich with coconut and herbs to the bright, tangy notes found in their fresh salads and delicate appetizers.
Ordering at Thantawan is like inviting a quiet piece of Thailand to your table. Whether you’re drawn in by the deep, warming aromas of Massaman curry or the lively, aromatic punch of green curry, there’s a familiarity that feels both grounding and a little adventurous. The balance of spices hints at careful crafting—flavors layered without overwhelming, offering a kindness to the palate that resonates long after the meal ends.
There’s something quietly charming about the hand-rolled spring rolls or the classic pad Thai noodles, each bite echoing stories of home kitchens and street vendors. And for those who love a touch of sweetness to finish, the mango with sticky rice or golden banana fritters evoke the simple, joyful pleasures that make Thai cuisine so beloved.
Beyond the food, it’s the people who leave a lasting impression—gracious, friendly, and clearly proud of their craft. The service feels personal, an extension of the hospitality embedded in the recipes themselves. You can’t help but feel welcomed, whether sitting inside among a mix of familiar faces or grabbing a comforting meal to take away, the aromas and flavors promising a return.

Red curry is legit, the flavours are all there and the pork had enough fats as well. Highly recommended, hard to find authentic Thai food here Ckn satay is average, the spices were ok but ckn breast is really not the correct meat for grilling. Peanut sauce was ok if rather weak Pad see Ew wasn't authentic, but it was executed well. Noodles have a good chew, there's wok hey, cabbage was well fried and crispy pork was flavourful. Authentic versions are 10x better but this one was delicious enough Mango sticky rice was fine, mango was not bad for the ones you can find here, coconut sauce was super thick and salted sufficiently, glutinous rice was abit too tightly packed but it's still quite decent overall

Had the mango and sticky rice and felt quite close to home (bkk)! Reasonably priced compared to other places and the owner chef is a sweet lady. Will def be back for more dishes Edit: went here with my friend and we ordered a couple of dishes including panang curry, pad thai, red curry, satay and mango sticky rice. We absolutely loved the food. Hands down the best and most authentic Thai food one can find in Edinburgh. A must must must visit if you’re in Edinburgh and are craving for an authentic Thai food. Have added it to my go to Thai place. Heart and tummy both were very satisfied! Value for money. Friendly service. Once again, it took me back home!! Definitely coming back and will recommend others to visit too

Delicious food! Very flavourful, and spicy in a good way but not overwhelming. The chicken skewers were a bit on the dry side, but not too bad. Prices were reasonable, staff were friendly. We had take out twice from here, but I'm not sure I could eat in the restaurant as the smoke from cooking isn't vented properly outside and it flows into the eating area. Just ordering at the desk near the kitchen made me cough quite a bit. But it was worth it because the food was quite good!

The food is very delicious, the staff are friendly. Didn’t have to wait for long for food. Would really recommend Thailander. The price is reasonable to.

Very tasty Thai food and friendly service! The chicken satay skewers were very delicious, as were the vegetable spring rolls. Lovely pork pad Thai and a very tasty, not too spicy, beef green curry with rice. The restaurant dining area is small and cosy - you share tables with other diners and they have a walk in as well as online delivery/takeout service. The food came out very quickly after ordering and the staff were all friendly and didn't rush you. Paying by cash gives a 10% discount which is great. We will be coming here for our Thai food from now on!

Highly recommend!!! Best Thai cuisines in Edinburgh for takeaway and single person meals!! Mango sticky rice is very authentic. Tasteful pad Thai. Thai tea is cheap and flavourful. Most important: VERY CHEAP and Reasonable Prices!!! 30£ for two and you can just be full and satisfied. Love here!!!!
